(5) I have heard it said, that in some countries, when children and youth are taught to read, they not hear: for find, by experience, that they can understand it better by hearing than reading. I grant this is not as it should be, but I wish to make a distinction here, and to give some account of the way in which these things are usually taught. Let us go into the school-room or place of instruction. There, when we first come there and when we speak to the children, are show them what is necessary, and to ask of them what is necessary; in other words, what they ought to know and do. It is very plain that the children are very apt to learn anything they are taught by example; and therefore, to this purpose is it well understood that they should ask of their teachers what they ought to learn and how.
